ConnectivityThis pillar encompasses the NREN’s strategic priorities related to the provision of connectivity for its members and end-users, and has objectives that specifically address the connectivity needs of the NREN’s stakeholders including but not limited to building and operationalizing the NREN’s network infrastructure, strengthening the campus networks and building the requisite human capacities needed to build, operate and maintain the information highways. This pillar defines the NREN and is critical for its mission.

  1. Facilitating the interconnection of member universities by building out the REN’s network infrastructure
  2. Strengthening campus network infrastructures through the promotion of relevant best practices and provision of technical assistance
  3. Developing the technical capacities of the universities’ ICT staff to ensure a smooth operation of not only the campus network but the whole NREN network operations
  4. Developing and commissioning communications and collaboration services on the network infrastructure

contentThe content pillar defines the primary use case for the connectivity and a key role of the NREN in developing capacities to create indigenous research content, curating existing research work and facilitating access to this resource for the researchers, faculty and students at the member institutions. A key objective under the content pillar is to

  2. Curating existing research content and facilitating access to it by building research repositories and platforms for publishing research work
  3. Promoting and facilitating access to research libraries and open educational content
  4. Strengthening the research capabilities of the member institutions and research communities

communityThe end-users of the NREN’s services are the students, faculty and researchers at the member institutions. The third pillar encompasses strategic objectives to help build strong user communities that are organized into related disciplines. These communities’ needs define and shape the services the NREN has to offer.

  1. Promoting the formation and development of communities of practice
  2. Provision of platforms to facilitate collaboration and communication for the communities of practice
  3. Developing and promoting use cases for the NREN’s capabilities through effective engagements with the end-user communities
