SomaliREN Annual Meetings Drive Major Enhancements in Somali Higher Education and Research

The Somali Research and Education Network (SomaliREN) concluded its Annual Meetings and Retreat on February 14th, 2024, after three days of intensive and fruitful discussions in Nairobi, Kenya. This pivotal gathering brought together leaders and representatives from 28 member institutions to engage in strategic dialogue aimed at enhancing the network’s impact on higher education across Somalia.

The meetings were characterized by a series of insightful exchanges and collaborative sessions, where participants discussed the current challenges and future opportunities within the Somali higher education sector. The agenda was rich with topics geared towards leveraging collective expertise to foster academic excellence and operational efficiency within member institutions.

A key outcome of this year’s meetings was the approval of two new members into the SomaliREN community: Horseed International University and Somali Public Agenda. These institutions successfully fulfilled the rigorous membership criteria set forth by SomaliREN, demonstrating their commitment and readiness to contribute to the network’s goals. The inclusion of these members marks a significant step toward expanding SomaliREN’s reach and enhancing its collaborative potential.

Another major highlight was the formalization of a strategic partnership between SomaliREN and Hormuud Telecom. The new partnership aims to harness the technological capabilities of Hormuud Telecom to significantly enhance the digital infrastructure across university campuses in Somalia. This enhancement will ensure that campuses are more connected than ever, thereby creating an environment in which educational and research institutions can thrive in the digital age and fostering greater access to global resources and collaborations.

The retreat also provided an opportunity for members to reflect on the network’s achievements over the past year and to strategize for the future. This strategic foresight is essential for maintaining momentum and ensuring that the network continues to serve as a catalyst for educational innovation and research advancement in Somalia.

As the SomaliREN Annual Meetings concluded, the atmosphere was one of optimism and renewed dedication. The discussions and decisions made during these three days are set to guide the network into a future where Somali higher education institutions are more interconnected, better resourced, and more influential both locally and internationally.

Looking ahead, SomaliREN is poised to continue its role as a vital enabler of educational excellence and collaboration in Somalia, driven by the collective expertise and commitment of its members.
