SomaliREN Participates in UbuntuNet Alliance AGM in Lusaka, Zambia, Strengthens Regional Ties

The Somali Research and Education Network (SomaliREN) has successfully participated in the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the UbuntuNet Alliance, held on May 9, 2025, in Lusaka, Zambia. SomaliREN was represented at this gathering by the Deputy Chairman, Dr. Abdikarim Mohaidin Ahmed and CEO, Eng. Ahmed Dahir Siyad.

The AGM, hosted by the Zambia Research and Education Network (ZAMREN), brought together leaders from National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) across Eastern and Southern Africa to review progress, align strategic priorities, and reinforce regional cooperation in advancing research and education networking.

This year’s AGM held special significance as it marked a leadership transition within the UbuntuNet Alliance’s Board of Directors and was hosted at the newly inaugurated ZAMREN House—a landmark achievement and a symbol of progress for Zambia’s research and education community.

As the highest decision-making body of the UbuntuNet Alliance, the AGM provided a platform for member NRENs to reflect on the Alliance’s milestones, engage in policy discussions, and elect new members to the Board. The gathering emphasized the importance of collaborative growth, transparency, and accountability in sustaining Africa’s regional digital infrastructure and services for research and education.

Following the AGM, SomaliREN’s delegation was hosted by the CEO of ZAMREN for a technical visit to ZAMREN’s state-of-the-art data center. The visit offered an opportunity for knowledge exchange on data infrastructure, connectivity management, and capacity development. Discussions explored potential areas of partnership aimed at enhancing the Somali research and education ecosystem.

Participation in the UbuntuNet Alliance AGM reflects SomaliREN’s active role in regional forums and its dedication to strengthening digital infrastructure and partnerships that support education, research, and innovation across Africa.
